This Day in Mexican History
222 years ago today (December 17, 1790) the Aztec Calendar Stone was discovered in Mexico City’s Zócalo.
Workers repairing the cathedral in the city’s main square were excavating when they found the 24 ton stone carving. It was soon mounted on the wall of the cathedral where it remained until the late 1890’s until it was transferred to an archeology museum.
In 1964, the Mexica Sun Stone was moved to Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park.
Archaeologists believe the Stone of the Sun was carved in 1479, just 40 years before contact with the Spanish.
The Stone of the Sun remains a symbol of our heritage and identity as Mexican people.

“…1784, Washington paid several unnamed “Negroes,” presumably Mount Vernon slaves, 122 shillings for nine teeth, slightly less than one-third the going rate advertised in the papers, “on acct. of the French Dentis [sic} Doctr. Lemay [sic],” almost certainly Le Moyer. Over the next four years, the dentist was a frequent and apparently favorite guest on the plantation…Washington probably underwent the transplant procedure—“I confess I have been staggered in my belief in the efficacy of transplantion,” he told Richard Varick, his friend and wartime clerk, in 1784—and thus it may well be that some of the human teeth implanted to improve his appearance, or used to manufacture his dentures, came from his own slaves.

711 to 1492 Spain, as it is now known, was ruled by Black African Moors.

The etymology of the word ‘Moor’ is black, or dark. Moors were a mix of Black African and Arabic Muslims who ruled Spain and the rest of the Iberian peninsula between 711 and 1492.

The Moors were constantly defending against invading Christian Europeans from the north. This period as we are brainwashed to know from K-12 is called the Reconquista, or the reconquest, during the Christian/Muslim war of the Crusades.

Nevertheless, Al-Andalus, or Moorish Iberia, flourished in the arts, sciences, medicine, religion, culture, and architecture. Córdoba was one capitol of the several caliphates on the peninsula, and was one of the most advanced and populous cities in the world at the time, as well as a great cultural, political, financial and economic center.

Rule under these kingdoms saw the rise in cultural exchange and cooperation between Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Under the Caliphate of Córdoba, al-Andalus was a beacon of learning, and the city of Córdoba became one of the leading cultural and economic centres in both the Mediterranean Basin and the Islamic world.

Moorish contributions to Western Europe and especially to Spain were almost incalculable—in art and architecture, medicine and science, and learning (especially ancient Greek learning).

exactly, it really upsets me when I think about it. I took several true history classes (that focused mostly on great lakes tribes history) in college and the other kids in my classes just knew SO little. It was very depressing. They didn’t know about termination, relocation, allotment, assimilation NOTHING. I basically felt like I was the teacher every day, sitting there and explaining everything that really happened and I know I missed so much because I didn’t have time. Ugh. We all just have to do our part to get the truth out there any way we can
