All too often in conversations about race in the 2010s, it seems that the racial conversation is all about performing the same racist actions but justifying them with new words. The use of yellowface, or even blackface, can be justified if the director uses the term “post-racial” or “colorblind.” But an honest look at statistics and demographics reveals that our society is anything but. We cannot enter a “post-racial” world by pretending problems do not exist, by pretending that lopsided representation is justified.

Acting as an apologist preserves the status quo in favor of those who already have the lion’s share of representation, who “don’t care” about race issues because they are fundamentally content with the system. If you can see your race and gender reflected in 80% of the faces that dominate movie posters, then it becomes meaningless to you. It’s worth nothing. It doesn’t damage your self-esteem, as it does for American children of any demographic other than “white male.”

Not that anyone should be surprised, but I’m fighting this privileged asshole about health disparities in my class right now (as always)

He felt it was appropriate to state that “Most minority families are found in low income neighborhoods which already puts stress on the family. The parents are usuallly involved in illegal activities to provide for their children. This has an impact on the way children are brought up. It seems that there is an endless cycle of children being born into poor uneducated families which in turn teaches these children that they are going to be poor and uneducated for the rest of their life. “

How loud can I type FUCK YOU! I am so irate, I’m shaking right now

This is a stupid online class I’m taking to try to sneak some extra credits in this summer, and omg it is so much stress. Wanna know why minorities die from stress related health problems? Racist assholes like this is why

Anyone wanna feed me some fiery lines to shoot him down? Cuz i’m so mad I just can’t even articulate my rage into words right now

White privilege is the the most mediocre white people in Hollywood being considered sex symbols, while black actors have to be damn near physically “flawless” to get a magazine cover.

Mod note: I adore Kristen Schaal, but do you think a PoC as unconventionally attractive as her could get work in TV? Nope.

I say this all the time. So many Hollywood “it” girls are unspectacular in every way, but for a WOC to have her moment they have to look like Beyonce. It’s such a double standard.

daniel tosh: it would be funny if you got raped by 5 guys
internet: omg you're so funny tosh haha what a hilarious joke lol lmao rofl
chris rock: slaves weren't free but i hope they enjoyed the fireworks
internet: wow wtf what a giant racist you should be ashamed god your whole shtick is about race get some new material

This morning, several screenshots and reblogs of this post started flooding my dash (and a lot of yours too. A post in which David Karp, the founder and CEO of Tumblr, asked whether or not it was ok to say the n word whilst actually saying the n word. This post was dated 2010.

This sparked what will not be the last in a series of conversations about exactly how little this networking site and its creator care at all about People of Color and, in this instance and many others, Black people specifically. That post was old, but there have been much more recent events to add to this issue.

Namely, both Dion and Riley (among other Black and PoC bloggers I follow) have received emails from Tumblr staff which threaten to shut down their blogs for hate speech, when said ‘hate speech’ has always been in direct self-defense of anon-and-off bloggers who’ve been aggressively racist toward them, often using the same slur in Mr. Karp’s post above.

But Tumblr staff and David Karp don’t actually give a fuck about hate speech. They’ve made this perfectly clear time and time again by responding with ‘freedom of speech’ to distress calls from People of Color who are experiencing direct, abrasive, stalkerish racism from white Tumblr users, and then by threatening to shut down those same victimized bloggers for defending themselves.

And about that freedom of speech thing. Here’s a screencap of the very first section of Tumblr’s community guideline policy.

Tumblr staff knows very well that this is a private forum and that freedom of speech does not apply when that speech is defined as malicious bigotry. The staff knows that they have every right (and responsibility) to remove posts or blogs with anti-queer, anti-trans, ableist, and rasist content (especially when they directly target another blogger). However, Tumblr staff also seems to be living on a post-racial internet where racism is impossible. Unless, of course, you’re being ‘racist’ toward a white person.

So, in this toxic environment where People of Color have been continually subjected to racial slurs, hate speech, death threats, rape threats, stalking, dehumanization and dismissal-while being given no opportunity to defend themselves without further threatening from Tumblr staff itself-a number of bloggers packed up today and moved on to other sites. No blogs were deleted by Tumblr, but a few folks didn’t feel like sitting around and waiting for that to happen.

I hope to keep in touch with the people who’ve left, and I hope that these other networking sites treat them well. I hope that the founders and CEOs of those sites don’t vomit ‘freedom of speech’ in their faces and then threaten to silence them for defending themselves when and if they are subject to violent, unprovoked attacks of racial hatred. And I will do what I can when I can to watch closely what happens here, because I’ll be staying. This is where I collect.

Protect yourselves and the people you love.

The only reason white people think being called a “white person” is racist, or harmful or wrong is because they are used to the privilege of just being seen as a “person” with out their race or color being and issue for them. You see, when you call them “white” suddenly they are not just a person, but now they have a color. Suddenly the are no better than a PoC. And thet scares the shit out of them.

Eva Hoeke, Editor-in-Chief of Jackie magazine, has resigned today over the backlash caused by a feature in their December issue labeling pop singer Rihanna as the “ultimate n***ab*tch.” Parlour magazine, who originally published the story, got hold of the press release which includes a few questionable parting words from Ms. Hoeke, whose resignation will take effect immediately:
“I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term ‘niggabitch’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie. Apart from that I also offered an rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution. I regret that I have taken a stand too quickly regarding an article in Jackie — which moreover had no racial motive at its basis. Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately. After putting my heart and soul into Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors – although not intented maliciously – are enough reason for leaving.
Ms. Hoeke does her credibility no favors by issuing this second non-apology via the press release in which she claims a racial slur “had no racial motive at its basis.” Huh? This sorry excuse comes as no suprise, considering the lighthearted tweets she posted Sunday urging offended readers to lighten up, as the story was just a “joke.” And let’s not forget the subsequent non-apology she published to the magazine’s Facebook page yesterday, in which she attempts to justify the use of the words by blaming black rap artists for distorting the “idea of what is normal” for the poor Dutch people. Her statements make Rihanna’s claim that her magazine is a “poor reflection of the evolution of human rights” ring truer than ever. RiRi was right to give her the ‘ol “F-you!”

Well, at least we can go to bed tonight knowing Ms. Hoeke did one right thing this week. Buh-bye!
